Tips to Choose the Right Optional Subject for MAINS UPSC Examination

The UPSC CSE Exam is conducted in three stages: Prelims, Mains and Interview. For the Mains Exam, the candidate is required to choose one optional subject and that subject can make a significant difference.

For UPSC aspirants, the decision to take an optional subject is a deeply ingrained situation. The majority of students are generally confused as to which optional subject to select for the UPSC Mains exam. According to the new syllabus, UPSC has decreased the number of optional topics for UPSC to one, making it more difficult to choose.

Out of the nine exams in the Mains, two papers i.e. Paper VI and Paper VII, are from the UPSC optional subject. The weightage of each of them is worth 250 marks so, the UPSC optional subject carries 500/1750 marks.

The following is a list of optional subjects:

        Geography

        Geology

        History

        Sociology

        Polity and International Relations

        Public Administration

        Anthropology

Here are some useful tips which will help you to choose your optional subject easily.

1.     The interest of the aspirant

The most crucial element to consider while choosing an optional subject is your interest in it as the aspirant should enjoy reading about it. You can also study at a faster speed in subjects that interest you.

2.     Easy availability of study material and guidance

The candidate must ensure that the Optional subject chosen has enough study material available so that it would be easy for the aspirants to prepare.

3.     The academic subject of the aspirant

This is an advantage because the applicants are already familiar with the subject and do not need to devote much time to studying for the optional. Candidates pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in any of the Arts subjects who wish to appear in the UPSC Exam should take it seriously and focus on both the UPSC Syllabus and the UPSC Mains Exam.

4.     Choosing subjects overlapping with General Studies syllabus

Optional Subjects like History, Geography, PSIR, and others overlap with the General Studies syllabus, therefore candidates can gain a lot from them in terms of time management and a better understanding of the optional.
